Bug ID: 313041
Summary: Cannot print using distant cups server
Classification: Unclassified
Product: okular
Version: 0.15.97
Hardware: Archlinux Packages
OS: Linux
Status: CONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: okular-devel at kde.org
Reporter: guillaume.debure at gmail.com

In my setup, my laptop does not have a cups server installed, but only libcups,
as explained in
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cups#Installing_the_client_package

Whenever I try to print from okular, I get the error :
Could not print the document. Detailed error is "Could not find a suitable
binary for printing. Make sure CUPS lpr binary is available". Please report to
bugs.kde.org

This is using KDE SC 4.9.97

Reproducible: Always

Have you actually read the detailed error? And if you have could you say if you
have lpr installed? Because to me that seems kind of important if i read that
detailed error.

Yes, I did read the message, of course, but I should have been more explicit :)

lpr is not installed on my machine because it is part of the cups daemon (at
least in archlinux packages), which should not be mandatory for printing, since
the printer is attached to a distant cups server.

Digging a bit more, I realize that this is not specific to okular, but to all
KDapps have a dependency onE apps. On the other hand, printing from libreoffice
*does* work without lpr installed.

So I guess there are three options:
1. lpr should be packaged with libcups and not with cupsdaemon, in which case
this would be an archlinux packaging issue
2. Or libcups in not sufficient for KDE and cupsdaemon is required, in which
case this would also be an archlinux packaging issue
3. Or relying on lpr for printing in KDE is wrong and shall be changed

I didn't have this issue in 4.9.x series, where this setup worked perfectly.
Oh, and this is using libcups 1.6.1.

Is this a bit clearer, or do you need anything else ? Meanwhile, I'll be
investigating on possible packaging issues.

Okular does not work like most of KDE apps for printing, Okular has [almost]
always needed lpr or lp to be installed for printing to work.

I have no clue if lpr can be used to print on a distant server or not. If it
can, well it's archs fault for not allowing you to install lpr without the
cupsdaemon, if it can not, you are welcome to make Okular print without lpr.
